The National Cadet Corps (NCC – Youth Wing of Armed Forces)provides this training to students while they are completing their mainstream education. As an NCC Cadet, you will receive training for the so-called regimental way of life (army life), discipline, duty, punctuality, orderliness, honesty, the dignity of labor, comradeship, direct battlefield combat, and harsh survival strategies alongside army officers while you are still a student.

You will be trained with any one of the NCC Army, Naval, or Air units during your certification course. You will undergo both institutional and practical training as well as attachment training (where you will have to interact with several Army officers and regular Army units).

You will be trained at various military hospitals and Army academies too like Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, Air Force Academy, Dundigal, Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, etc.

There are numerous reservations for NCC cadets in many public as well as private sector organizations or the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force (Tri-Services) and you will have an advantage over other job candidates with your NCC certificate while you are looking for employment.

Roles and Responsibilities

Trained NCC cadets are engaged with one or more of the responsibilities of the following role and many others during their training: –

1. You will be training with army officers and defense personnel (Indian Army-ThalSainik, Navy-Nau Sainik and Air Force-Vayu Sainik).
2. You will be participating in Republic Day and Independence Day parades as well as other social service and community development programs like blood donation camps or awareness programs, tree plantation campaigns, anti-drug rallies, cancer awareness programs, disaster relief camps, BetiBachaoBetiPadhao yojana, AIDS awareness programs, traffic control projects etc.
3. You will be providing assistance in slum clearance, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, or to war and epidemic victims etc.
4. You will be participating in various national sports activities like NCC National Games, Jawahar Lal Nehru Hockey CupTournament, Subroto Cup Football Tournament, All India GV Mavlankar ShootingChampionship, National Shooting Championship Competition, International Day of Yoga etc.
5. You will be participating in the Prime Minister’s Rally, various leadership camps, ThalSainik Camp, Nau Sainik Camp, Vayu Sainik Camp, rock climbing training Camps, Annual Republic Day Camp.
6. You will be participating in mountaineering expeditions, all India trekking expeditions, camel safari, parasailing activities, cycle and motorcycle rallies etc. because NCC training has an adventure-based learning protocol.

What work will you have to do?

• Assisting and caring for people – Assisting people in availing of services; taking care of people in different situations; offering help and services to others.
• Assisting and caring for animals – Taking care of animals in different situations and settings.
• Leading – Inspiring and motivating co-workers and others to work to achieve specific goals; enabling and facilitating others to perform tasks effectively; addressing issues and solving problems in order to help people perform well.
• Working in a team – Working in a team of people; developing team; maintaining professional relationships among team members.
• Exercising physically– Exercising physically using various methods, techniques, equipment and devices; exercising using a fitness regime; running.
• Performing physical activities– Performing physical activities that require use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
• Communicating with co-workers and others – Communicating with people in writing, verbally or otherwise inside your workplace and various other people who may or may not have professional relationships with your place of work and with people at large.

Class 8 in school–NCC ‘A’ Level Certificate

After completing Class 8 in school, you can go for NCC ‘A’ Level Certificate through training and written test. You can join through your school having an NCC unit by applying to your school’s headmaster or also as an open cadet through the nearest NCC Open Unit. You will be undergoing a medical examination if your application is accepted. You need to be between 13-17 years of age. You can finish your school-level education simultaneously with the training. The training period is 2 years. You must appear for the Certificate Examination within 12 months after completing your training.

Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per the scheme of studies – NCC ‘B’ then ‘C’ Level Certificates

During Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per the scheme of studies, you can directly obtain NCC ‘B’ then ‘C’ Level Certificate through training and written test. You will be enrolled in the Senior Division / Wing of NCC by applying to the Officer commanding any NCC unit for Certificate B training. You will be undergoing a medical examination if your application is accepted. You can complete your school-level studies together with the NCC training. You can apply until 26 years of age. If you already have a Certificate A, you will be awarded 10 bonus points as against direct candidates without Certificate A. You must appear for the Certificate B examination within 18 months after completing your training. You will be allowed to appear for the Certificate C examination only after one year of passing the Certificate B examination. The training period is 3 years for B and C certificates together.

Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies – Class 11-12 or Diploma or 1st year in college – NCC ‘B’ then ‘C’ Level Certificates

While in the 1st year of any Degree or during your Diploma from Polytechnics(after Class 10) or during Diploma after Class 11-12, you can apply to the Officer commanding any NCC unit for Certificate B training. You will be enrolled in the Senior Division / Wing of NCC. You will be undergoing a medical examination if your application is accepted. You will be allowed to appear for the Certificate C examination only after one year of passing the Certificate B examination. You can complete your Degree or Diploma courses simultaneously. You can apply only till 26 years of age.

Educational qualification for Join NCC

After passing Class 8 in school, you can enroll yourself for NCC Certificate A.

After passing Class 11-12 or during 1^st year of college or during Diploma after Class 11-12 or after Diploma (till 26 years of age), you can apply for NCC Certificate B and then C.

In order to apply for NCC training at any level, it is mandatory to be enrolled in an educational institution.

An NCC Cadet is a student first hence you can simultaneously appear for whichever professional or competitive examinations you have applied for to complete your mainstream education or obtain jobs while going through your NCC training.

This is a voluntary option and only school and college students can join and the required age range is 13-26 years. After obtaining a certificate you may also exit the training at any point to go for higher education according to your interests or continue with a job according to your educational qualifications.

Employment Opportunities after Complete NCC Traning

Many Private and Public Sector companies give preference to the holders of ‘A’, ‘B’ &’C’ certificates. Many reputed companies like Reliance Group, Ambuja Group, Tata, Birla, Infosys, and other MNC prefer NCC Cadets for different jobs too. Almost all government universities and jobs have reservations for NCC cadets.

Selected cadets are also given opportunities to visit foreign countries as ‘Brand Ambassadors’ of our nation and as their State Guests (under Youth Exchange Programs).

After completing your training and obtaining NCC ‘A, B, or C’ Certificates, you can use your NCC certificates and training experience for the following jobs or others as a trained NCC cadet:

• State or Union Public Service Commissions.
• Civilian Gliding instructors, Girl Cadet Instructors, Whole Time Lady Officers at NCC
• Direct Recruitment to ranks within Indian Tri-Services (short service commission or permanent commission upon grant), both technical and non-technical branches (depending upon educational qualifications).
• Indian Air Force Stations (non-technical airmen, Air Force Police etc.), Army units (assistants or support personnel), Naval Bases (apprentices, direct entry sailors, etc).
• Various security service providers or businesses(beat officers, safety executives, security officers, etc).
• Para Military Forces like BSF (Border Security Force), CISF (Central Industrial Security Force), Coast Guard, CRPF
• For field service posted at various hotels, resorts, locations with frequent military activities, etc).
• At service hospitals or with Military Nursing Service.
• In forest areas under surveillance or for tourists.
• At borders (border police forces), mountain passes etc.
• Foreign cruises (Navy or Coast Guard).

Essential Qualifications for NCC Traning

• You should have interests for Social Occupations. Social occupations involve helping or assisting others; these involve working with and communicating with people to provide various services; these may involve educating and advising others.
• You should have interests for Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment.
• You should have knowledge of Public Safety and Security – relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to maintain law and order situations, providing state or national security for protecting geographical territories, marine territories and sky from potential enemy attacks and protecting people and properties.
• You should have knowledge of Planning and Development – various principles, ways and processes to plan, implement, and monitor projects for human development, urban development, rural and regional development, transportation, environmental conservation and protection, etc.
• You should have knowledge of Social and Developmental Work– various principles, theories and processes to help underprivileged or disadvantageous people developmentally, socially and economically as well as help them to get proper healthcare and other benefits. This includes helping underprivileged or disadvantageous people get education and employment.
• You should have Active Listening Skills – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.
• You should have Critical Thinking Skills – analysis of complex situations, using of logic and reasoning to understand the situations and take appropriate actions or make interpretations and inferences.
• You should have Problem Solving Skills – analysis and understanding of problems, evaluating various options to solve the problems and using the best option to solve the problems.
• You should have Active Learning Skills – Focused and continuous learning from various sources of information, observation and otherwise for application in getting work done.
• You should have Coordination Skills – working together with other people to get things done.
• You should have Physical Stamina – The ability to exert yourself physically over long periods of time without getting winded or out of breath.
• You should have Arm-Hand Steadiness – The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
• You should have Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence – The ability to coordinate the movement of your arms, legs, and bodily motion; the ability to keep or regain your body balance when in an unstable position; the ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with your body, hands, arms, fingers, or legs.
• You should have Hearing Sensitivity – The ability to detect or tell the differences between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness.
• You should have Manual Dexterity – The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.

NCC Cadet Salary

During your training, a total of 150 scholarships will be awarded to Junior Division / Wing candidates and 100 scholarships to Senior Division / Wing candidates of Rs. 2000/- each annually, to deserving NCC Cadets who have undergone 2 years of training with at least 60% attendance.

If you pass Class 10 or Class 12, you will receive Rs 6000/- and Rs 12,000/- respectively as a one-time payment.66 cadets doing other professional courses are also awarded Rs 30,000/- each for one year all over India.

If you are selected for Cadet Training in the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun or Officers Training Academy, Chennai, and ultimately join the defense forces, you will receive a monthly fixed stipend of Rs. 56,100 during Cadet Training and more after completing your training.

After successfully completing officer training at the various defense forces training institutes across the country like in Dehradun, Chennai, Dundigal, Ezhimala, etc. you may expect around Rs. 56,100 – Rs. 1, 77, 000 a month at the Lieutenant level (Level 10).

At the Captain level (Level 10 B), you may expect around Rs. 61, 300 – Rs. 1, 93, 000 a month.

You will progress through various levels in the Tri-Services like Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier, Major General, etc.

If you reach the Lieutenant General Level 15, you may expect Rs. 1, 82, 200 – Rs. 2, 24, 100 a month.

The Chief and Vice Chief of Army Staff (COAS and VCOAS-Levels 17&18) receive a fixed pay of Rs. 2, 50, 000 a month.

In addition to a monthly salary, a Military Service Pay (MSP) is also received by officers belonging to the ranks of Lieutenant to Brigadier (Levels 10 to 13A). MSP equals a fixed amount of Rs. 15, 500 a month.
